Nordic Notes turns 100!
It all started in 2005, when I was still the co-owner of three other labels as well as a publishing company. I had started feeling constrained and wanted to explore new territory.
The first releases on Nordic Notes came from Hidria (spacefolk/ spacerock from Finland), Ulpa (psychedelic indie pop from Iceland) and even some punk rock. In 2008, Alamaailman Vasarat, also from Finland, joined the family. It wasn’t a conscious decision, but over time, Finnish artists have become the main focus of Nordic Notes.
2010 brought another new signing, the kings of Humppa, Eläkeläiset, and a new experience – to take part in Finland‘s Eurovision Song Contest qualifiers. The third place wasn’t quite enough to go through, but it sure was an interesting episode. Slowly but surely, more and more folk bands joined the label roster – modern folk, traditional folk, as long as it touches me I’ll consider it.
Of course, Nordic Notes is also home to a number of Norwegian, Swedish, Icelandic and Faroese artists. We even found some space to include artists from the Baltic States. The creative potential of the Nordic countries is truly amazing. Some of you will wonder why there are only relatively recent songs on this sampler. In some cases, the licences have simply run out, but, more importantly, I wanted to present the here and now.
I am looking forward to the next 100 releases. The first couple are in the pipeline and can already be found on this sampler.
